Advocacy Meeting: Highway 50 Safety Improvements

March 23 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

We have been advocating for safety improvements along Highway 50, from the Y to Stateline, in South Lake for many years. Caltrans has a proposal out in the form of a Draft Initial Study. You can see the project description and maps of the proposed improvements here.
We have scheduled a dedicated meeting with Caltrans staff and the mobility advocacy community.

Due to COVID, the public process is set up so that you can make an appointment to call Caltrans and talk with them and ask questions. For your comments to be officially considered in the final environmental decision, your comments need to be officially submitted by March 31 to South.Lake.Tahoe.Safety.Project@dot.ca.gov. You can watch a video here  and review the Public Notice for more info on that.

Summary
This project proposes to improve roadway lighting through the corridor and implement a complete-street vision by installing a green bike lane treatment and enhanced-visibility crosswalks. The project also proposes improved bicycle signage and installing a two-stage turn queue box for bike turning movement at multiple locations for additional bicycle safety. The proposed work includes installing pedestrian signals at mid-block crossings between Truckee Road and River Drive, between Brockway Avenue and Blue Lake Avenue, and between Herbert Avenue and Ski Run Boulevard. A full signalized intersection is proposed at Johnson Avenue.
